You Never Know.....

you never know

You never know what to find when you meet new people. The most middling person turns out to be very interesting or surprises us.

We are driving and a man stops in front of us. That’s not that special and if possible, we stop to chat. The man is jumping up and down. He has ten Haflingers him self, we understand, and has thousand ( Czech) questions, how pity we can’t communicate. I try to ask if he knows a shop where we can buy a mineral stone. He points in the direction we go, so we hope to find it easy.

Than he ask money or telling us about money. We still don’t understand and with some mixed feelings, we go on. Three villages further we are set for the night when the same man arrives. In the back of his car a mineral stone, 100 Czech Crowns are exchanged and off he goes again. You never know……

English Teacher

After a good sleep in a small village, we almost ready to leave. Our neighbors have friendly waved to us last evening however real contact wasn’t there. That’s always some disappointing because we love to chat. This time a middle-aged woman with her 94-year old mother approaching us, if mother can stroke the horses? She asks. No problem. The woman speaks very good English.

In the communistic time there was only the possibility to learn Russian, nevertheless her mother insisted to learn her English and hired a teacher at home. To train her skills she start, as a 10-years old girl, writing letters to a girl in the Netherlands She kept writing for almost forty years and at last she has met her pen pal in the Netherlands. Tears in her eyes telling this. Wonderful touching story.

Into the Future

In search for a place, we see a fence with little horses on it. Maybe a possibility and off I go to ask. I ring the bell and a young woman opens a window, then screaming to me, other people gathering for the windows also screaming. In no time, there is five, eight woman around me, with their husbands, yelling they are Gypsy’s too! The oldest woman grasp my hand and palmistry me immediately.

It’s a bit overwhelming and my head is red and flushing. John can only laugh and makes pictures. Apparently, I have two male lovers in my life, I will live very long and I am a big spender.

The daughter’s palmist says I have to give something valuable to seal the deal… “Something valuable to me not necessary money.” I suggest some hair garment piece and give it to the older lady.

Now she becomes more obtrusive and indeed wants money. It’s time to leave the place and within some push and shove, I jump on the box. You never know what to find when you ring a bell……

Out of our leaque

In Pardubice, we decide to visit the racecourse hoping they have a place for several days. They must be horse lovers too so a happy prospect, we think. Entering the area, we are totally out of place.

Posh woman and man on expensive horses with not even a glance to us. The manager, not at all interested in our journey insists a stable for the night, allowing us to keep the horses outside during the day, and charging 60 euros for three nights. That’s out of our league and we kindly turn down the proposal.

Nevertheless, we receive four bails of hay and off we go again. We know not to count on somebody’s generosity however; we expected some more hospitality from this big company, but again: You Never Know

How about a backyard?!

Instead of the racing course, we find a place in the nearby village. An old unfinished house, our host still in her pajamas gives us permission to stay next to her. In the evening, she and her husband approaching us for a chat. No problem if we wan t to stay for two nights and visit Pardubice, they will take an eye on it. Then to our surprise, the owner tells he has 16 Shetlander ponies and 250 tortoises in his backyard. Not to mention two boa constrictors.

You never know what’s behind a fence, behind people or story’s they have to tell.
