World Cup of Amateur Racing begins on Friday
Tuesday, May 13, 2008 - an ARTICEL by John Manzi, for the NAADA
Monticello, NY --- The 2008 World Cup of Amateur Racing is off and running, with the drawing of post positions for the Friday night (May 16) card at Maywood Park. The World Cup features the top amateur drivers from each of the participating countries of which there are 12 this year. The event is considered the world championship of amateur racing. The 12 competing countries include the United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Denmark, Netherlands, Norway, Germany, Austria, Hungary, the Czech Republic and Spain.
“The competitors need at least six drives during the six-track series but the way we worked it out each participant will have eight drives when the series is completed,” noted Joe Faraldo, president of the North American Amateur Drivers Association, the hosts for this year's World Cup.Host racetracks include Maywood Park (May 16), Balmoral Park (May 17), Monticello Raceway (May 19), Yonkers Raceway (May 20), and on May 21, Freehold Raceway (in the afternoon) and The Meadowlands (in the evening). At Maywood Park on Friday the first two races are dedicated to the World Cup Series. Drivers starting in the first race (in post position order) include Bob Mellsop (Australia), Fred Handelaar (Netherlands), Antonio Valente (Canada), TBA, Bjorn Steinseth (Norway), David Siegel (United States), Teddy Wang (Denmark), and Gavin Cook (New Zealand). The second race world class drivers include (in post position order) Antonio Valente, Bob Melsop, David Siegel, Alle Loman (Czech Republic), TBA, Christian Mayr (Austria), Andreu Oliva-Suau (Spain), and Gavin Cook.
The world champion is selected through a scoring system, which rewards the driver who has reached the highest score after all races have been driven. The winner in each race gets two points more than the second place finisher. From the second place and down the interval is always the same so that last placed receives one point. If races are driven with different number of drivers the point system with the highest number of participants will be used for all races.
Disqualified and not placed drivers are given one point. If more than one driver has the same score in the final counting, the number of first, then second places, then on down are used to determine the rank. If this is not enough to determine the rank the added time used in all races driven by the actual driver will be decisive. In case of a photo finish of two or more horses sharing the same place, everyone will be given the score he/she would have received if he/she had been alone in that place. an Artical by John Manzi, for the NAADA
