We made a list of the outdoor camping supplies we need and the requirements for each item. Not to heavy Easy to find fuel Robust quality Liquid Lamps or candles. We do have a solar system for electricity but we can’t depend on that totally. Therefore, we searched on sites for coleman camping products , and found the Coleman fuel lamp, working on unleaded gas. Coleman camping supplies are coming in such good quantity AND quality, we where really surprised by that. We choose a rather more “nostalgic” appropriate one and nice looking on the caravan too. Unleaded gas you can find everywhere. We used the lamp (and the stove on gas too) every evening and it only expenditure approximately 1.3 gallon a month.
Inside the lamp there is a”gas-sock”. First time we had to change one we did not know, you have to “burn” it a little. You raise the pressure with a little pump as far as possible. The flame is adjustable in height and gives enough light to read. Also using it outside is no problem. You can imagine us sitting at the river border, low light, glass of whine, talking….. Camping Stove Next item to choose was a camping stove. Again, a Coleman camping stove turned out to be the best choice. It’s two pit burners also working on unleaded gas so we only have to carry one jerrycan. At the front of this little lightweight stove is a pressure device. With a little pump, you raise the pressure and when it’s enough just light the pit and adjust the flame to what you need. We like cooking on gas rather than propane. The propane bottles are heavy and you also need an outside storage. Disadvantages of the Coleman cooking device is the soot on the pans after a while. Probebly because it take some time to adjust the flame.
Camping Heaters Because we travel also on colder seasons, we want a heater. Just a little one because inside measurements of the carriage are 500 cubic foot and quickly heated. Most ideal was to look for a camping heater on unleaded gas, but we could not find one. Next best choice is a kerosine heater. The one we choose works on pure kerosine or petroleum. Easy in use and also an addition when we cook because we can put a pan above it, to keep food warm. We never cook outside. All cooking supplies are stored inside and it’s a burden to carry all stuff outside the carriage. When it was too warm to cook, we eat a salad, (tomato’s, olives and garlic bread, mmm)
However, the prices of new devices can be high. The Coleman lamp and the camping heater we bought from a private person found through the Internet. After seeing the advertisement, we first searched if it was still a stock item, knowing we might need spare parts. The Coleman stove we bought new but should not have done so. If you take the time there is plenty second hand stuff or even new stuff on Internet auctions. After-all camping with horses is almost the same as camping holidays with caravan or tent. The only difference is the length of our travel! By now, you know that we hooked to Coleman stuff. It’s robust equipment, for all seasons, and important “it can take it”.
