This life is just a journey: Happy or Not

People ask why I am telling so much about the disadvantages. This life is just a journey is my answer. The more simple answer is: disadvantages belongs also to this kind of life! But,they right. Especially in this cold February weather it’s easy to feel down. So I put my mind on the beautiful things that happen.

Fear

Our route includes many rivers and thereby also ferries and bridges. One specifically ferry is known to be very hard to take.

It starts with a steep hill downward. For our two horses it’s the first time to travel on water, standing on a slippery steel floor.

One advice we held in mind is from a diehard in driving. “Just act if everything what happens is normal. Don’t let the horse feel your insecurity”.

Steep Hill

John drives careful to the top of the road. The steep hill in front of us. Slowly we let the horses sink in their breech. Step by step, brakes on maximum we arrive on the ferry.

My job is to keep the horses calm and I am always standing right in front of them. John solidly the reins in his both hands. Everything goes well. Even a stiff breeze does not disturb them. Life is beautiful!

Leading mare

Next hurdle to take in this watery country is a steel bridge. The highway runs parallel with our road. Cars tear along the highway. The steel bridge makes an awful noise.

It’s still a bit windy and the approach road is steep and heavy. At the top of the bridge the horses’ act agitated. What we have learnt so far is the fact that horses are followers. Especially following the leading mare.

That’s I! I jump of the car and walk in front of them the whole 3-mile. They calm down again and in no time we are on the other side of the bridge. Life is so beautiful!

More good news

We ordered new mattresses. They are at last ready! My sister in law brings them over.On my birthday family travel miles to see me, we celebrate it at a restaurant.

We make an appointment with the kids for a “goodbye” weekend before we cross the border to Germany. My sister gives me a call from California followed by a ring from my father.

An old friend has arranged a spot nearby her house. We sleep and shower at her place. Laundry is clean and in the cabin in just one night. Life is really beautiful.

We travel in the neighbourhood of John’s birthplace. He left that place 25 years ago. Have done a lot of jobs since then. Back now with a horse drawn carriage. Learn a lot. Still lots to learn. This life is just a journey.

By the way: after crossing al this rivers everything becomes easy. Do you see how relaxed we are?
