Hungarian experiences
by: Thea

I am very sorry but never did want to offend you with the word Ignorant when talking about our Hungarian experiences. It?s a lack of using the right word because my English is not my first language. We have spend 6 months in Hungary, living amongst the Hungarian people in a small house in rural area. We also spend lots of time in the city Gyór a very modern town as you maybe know. There is where we found out that there is a hug gap between town and village, rich and poor, young and old people in Hungary. We did have a good time in Lazi, the village we lived but also experienced some difficulties. One of the most annoying things was that everyone from the West is seen as ?well-to-do?. Meaning that most of the time, we paid more than average for the same things as Hungarian do. It?s understandable but nevertheless annoying. Another issue is that in Hungary, there is a lot of potential but its like most of the people is waiting for the ?big? money when finally Hungary will be part of the EU. They are not building with confidence on their own efforts. Its like they stay more ?Eastern? then Slovakia ore Czech in example. I am not political well informed but its annoying to see people leaning back to see if it will happen instead of doing something their own. Good example? We tried to do some business but even with good money insight, it?s a hell of a job to make appointments. They not showing up and say Yes meaning maybe or no. On the other hand, we experienced good old hospitality from unexpected people. Our nextdoor neighbor a very poor woman shared her vegetables without a thought with us. We helped here with other things as good neighbors do. We left Hungary however with good feelings, certainly going back some time. Sorry if I offended you! It?s a beautiful country with a troubled past and it will probably take another generation before changes will happen.
