Horse Drawn Caravan Journey 2007

Horse Drawn Caravan Journey: A day by day overview from our first year of traveling from The Netherlands to the East.

Date Places km total Our Journey in 2007
A day by day overview about the people we meet, the places we visit, all the in- and outs of traveling with a horse drawn caravan.
September 2006 Baarle-Nassau Netherlands 0 -  The first travel day of our journey.  It's exciting to sit on the box not knowing what's coming up next. All the preparations has lead us to this special moment, driving in the sun on our first Horse Drawn Caravan Ride, Aysha and Isabella pulling the wagon. (including video!)
Januari  31 Goirle 15 - After a very shaky first trip  with our Horse Drawn Caravan we arrive in Goirle. A little farm in the middle of a giant wood. We learn our first lessons when we meet our host Jan and Annie Kools and their autistic grandchild. New experiences on a horseback.
Februari 7-8-9 Haghorst 15 - After a fabulous week in Goirle we travel today to Haghorst. We stay on a gypsy caravan camping site filled with old carriages. Ton and Ine Lavrijsen, owners of this special camping are welcoming us and in revers I sew their curtains. I nice week dispite the weather! We have a little bad weather video on that one.
10 Spoordonk 18 - Our third place but what a strange one! The woman of the house claimes we treate the horses wrong especially their nutrition. Without our permission she give apples to Isabella, something we never do because Isabella act strongly on the sugar in it. Not a nice visit and we leave as soon as possible.
11-12-13-14-15 Schijndel 20 - My birthday is coming up on february fourtheen, yes Valentine's day, and we search for a place to stay a bit longer. We arrive on the 11 th to Rene and Marjo and their teens Bart and Petra van Dam. Here we get maximal exposure and we learn some Life changing secrets
15-16 Veghel 15 - The Media Carriage is on our way again! After the latest broadcast they want to know how we are doing. A camera and sound technician is following us to Veghel to meet Marien and Martien van den Tillaart. This family has invited us through the broadcastcompany and we are happy to have a new place. It's a hard way to get here with new adventures on our way! It's not only the horses who are pulling the wagon!
16-17 Uden 15 -  In Uden we have an address of  Frisian Horse breeders Johan and Marian Verhoeven. It's almost carnaval and dispite their social duty's they give us a warm welcome and fabulous breakfast.
17-18-19-20-21 Vinkel 12 - They kids are on visit while we stay on a rabbitfarm. We came here on a special way and we meet other bohemian travelers. After Carnaval we heading to Oss to meet an old friend. Rolling Journey
21-22 Oss 20 - Through the intermediary of Gerjon an old friend we stay in a  new housing estate  to find out that Life is just a Journey
22-23-24-25-26
-27-28  March 1
Kerkdriel 17 - John's town of birth (Kerkdriel)  and it's very special to drive through the streets of his youth and stay at his uncle's house. We sleep in the wagon but visiting family and friends all day. When we leave horsepower is not enough, we need a tractor to pull us out!

March1-2 Neerijnen 13 -

We pass our second big river De Waal taking the busy iron bridge. The first thing we do is a new encounter with an old friend of John living in a smal wooden Box as hermit.  He knows a vet with a place to stay. We meet new people and we get a chance to ask Life Changing Questions

2-3-4-5-6 Herwijnen 14 - Herwijnen is a small place on De Waal riverbanks. A small road is wandering on top of the dikes. This is where we meet Bernardine and her kids. Warm and wonderful people. Here we meet also other horse drawn travelers Edmee and Robin. Another visitor is Eric, a man in his fifty planning a trip with a gypsy caravan and horse from the Netherlands to the Middle East. We exchange lots of experiences together. We have a video of Edmee's and Robins horse when they treat his hoofs. It was a very hectic five day's where we develop a Lifestyle Strategy
The second day we meet Piet,  man from Haaften. Kindly and quit he shows a lot of interest and offers also help by collecting hay. When leaving this place he also arrange a tractor to pull us up hill. We go up further North to Deil.
6-7-8-9-10-11 Deil 15 -

We arrive on the HartenHoeve. A farm and riding school dedicated to intellectually handicapped persons.  The owners are friendly and very busy with their own kids, foster kids, 40 horses and 200 clients. Unbelievable they have also a spot for us. They kindly loan us their wagon to buy some oat and hay. After two weeks, we have also some thoughts about Minimalist Lifestyle.
Here in Deil two other things happen: Piet is visiting us with a proposal. He noticed a big problem on our caravan and he offers his help to sort this problem out. A welcome offer and absolutely necessary. The second big thing is Vienna, a small white Jack Russell. The hurdle is growing.

11-12-13-14-15
-16-17
Haaften 10 -

We stay on Piet and Janny's driveway. After inspection, it's necessary to give the undercarriage a complete overhaul. Piet is an experienced wagon driver with a bunch of skills. With great profession, he starts the Carriage Assembly
It's impossible to stay inside the caravan so we end up on their spare bedroom.T he whole week we live like a family in one house. We have dinner, lunch and breakfast together while Piet is working on the Van. Unbelievable how dedicated and helpful he is to our journey. The last evening we celebrate in a restaurant.

17-18-19 Asch 17 -

Piet drives with us to the next address. Here in Asch again a host who contact us after the first broadcast. Carlo, his wife and two children, lives on a big estate, making a living of selling vintage cars. Here we stay in a garden with a fence and electric gate system; they give us the wireless control for the evening because they have other things to do. The children are young and very interested in what we do. At school, they have a project involving circus, fairs and gypsy live. Immediately we decide to stay there till Monday morning and bring the kids to school.

19-20 Veenendaal 30 -

From Asch to Veenendaal we pass a small town: Zoelen. Here is the church where Piet has collect some special oak timber he converts into our undercarriage. Veenendaali s a dreary little town. We drive more miles than we want on a busy road, in the middle of traffic jam. People unfriendly and gruff. We stay on a abandoned pig stable. No place to stay longer.

20-21 Harskamp 25 -

It's cold but clear weather. We want to take the road through national Park "De Hoge Veluwe". Unfortunately, we don't get permission. Inside the park is a broad spectrum of wildlife. Some passageway's blocked with cattle grids. Aysha and Isabella can't walk on those things. We have to make a detour through a wood with a very busy road. We end up on the cow farm of Wim and his wife Wilma and kids. Hard working people with a great hart. Here we have time to write about some Carriage Driving Lessons

21-22 Beekbergen 25 - It's a wonderfulsurrounding this part of Holland, with woods and hills. The horses have no problem at all taking these roads. It's difficult to find a place. One woman won't even open the door when I ring on her doorbell, she gesticulate me away.  At the end of the afternoon, we see a little farm. An elderly woman is very prudently; nevertheless she gives us a place to stay, some hay and fresh eggs.
22-23-24 Wilp 30 -

We drive still north planning to reach Rijssen where the supplier lives from our hoof shoes. There is a big lake here where we want to stay but it's notallowed. Forthe first time we have to pay for a place on a RV site near cafe "DeKroon". A nice spot close to abig town (Deventer)and John takes his bike to do some shopping.

24-25 Holten 30 -

We cross the big river IJssel, driving through Deventeron a sleepy Sunday morning. Without any problems Aysha and Isabellabrings usto a special spot. My mother, died in 1998, is buried in Deventerand I take the opportunity to visit her grave. The caravan andhorsesaccompanied by John stays on the parking lot while I say goodbye andask herblessings for this journey. I know for sure she will do so. In theafternoon,we reach Holten. A big farm at the end of a long driveway is our goal.Thedriveway is that long I take the bike because we don't want to scarepeople ofby driving the whole hurdle on their site. It's no problem to stay andwe get aguided tour through their dairy farm. The fresh milk is warm and thick.

25-26-27-28 ZunaRijssen 15 -

In Zuna we are close toRijssen, hometown ofGerrit Smit. He is the man who makes the horses shoes we are notsatisfied. Atthe moment, we are using iron shoes just because there was no otherway. Wewant some advice and help. Our host, Martin Sandrina and their sons BasandKoen, proud owners of a horse themselves, knows him and we make avisit together. The horses stay in a coral as big as three football fields, notcomplaining.

28-29-30 Dalphsen 25 - InDalphsen we have an address from a former host relative, Johan andMarietje Hulsman. Johan is breeder of the famous Dutch Drafthorse.Especially for us he brings his price stud Michel to a beautiful mare. The video on that is impressive! This coupleis also busy with Horse Drawn ride for disabled people. The caravans heuse are all accesible for wheelchairs.
30-31 Ijhorst 20 -  We reach IJhorst after along drive through the forest. For the first time we let Viennawalk free besides the car. Not a goodchoice! After a few minutes, she takes her chance and run away lured bychickencackle. With a proud snout but a furious owner following her she comesback. Abig chicken is running away, her wings down. The owner almost chokingin herrage, demanding we pay 20 euro. She also calls the forestranger. Wheneverything is calm, we leave to find a place to stay. The firsthouseownerafter the forest knows a meadow we can use. Funny: the man say's: "whata

coincidence! You are the second horse drawn caravan asking for aplace".Eager to meet other travelers I ask when he spook to them. His answerwithouteven smiling: about 15 Year’s ago. More about this place:  ModernBohemian
