Foal Breeder in Czech

foal breeder czech

A foal breeder is our host after the city camping in Breclav. There we woke up in the morning surrounded by city noises, ending up on a ranch in the evening.

The city camping worked out fine for us. We did some shopping downtown, arranged mobile Internet and bought a new gas-socket for our Coleman lamp. A doctor, also shopping in the outdoor shop helped us translating our “Czech-English-German language tryout.”

We leave the camping around ten in the morning. Just easy going. After an hour, a man turns his car in front of us, waves to stop. He speaks a bit German, inviting us to his friend’s ranch nearby. Normally we go on for 6 miles before stopping for lunch. However visiting a real Czech ranch and foal breeder is an outstanding opportunity. Half hour later we arrive on the spot. An enormous big rectangle territory, surrounded with buildings and stables.

Master of Czech

Our host Petr turns up, and points out a place where we can park. He does not speak any other language then Czech so a young stable girl is our translator. He walks around the wagon and invites us for coffee on a large table outside. After a while, we understand we are here at the Ladna ranch, which owner Petr is the Master of Czech “two-horse-team” driving skills. Not ones but 4 times he won the Master trophy!

That’s lucky! Exactly what we need. Advice about our route from an experienced driver, we can’t believe our luck! In no time, he gives us directions through Czech, within the limits we use for pulling the horse drawn caravan.

Petr invites us for dinner, (meaning lunch, we think because it’s noon) Together with our host, two stable girls and a friend we drive back into Brecklav. The town we started 2 hours ago, and in ten minutes we drive alongside the auto-camping we left that morning.

In the little “Vine Bistro”, we eat like dockworkers. Great Czech food on big plates. The leftovers come in a “doggy bag”, something common in America but not for us, Dutchies.

Surprise

Back on the range, Petr has a surprise for us. He has a herd of forty horses out in the wild and is on his way to feed some additional bread. That morning, and yesterday also, two foals are born in the herd. “Do we want to join him to watch?” Do we? Yes!

In no time we are on his big forklift, filled with bread, driving through his herd. The two little foals behind their mothers, still with a bit shaky balance. The placenta under a tree, the foals are born without any assistance from nobody.

Petr is very much involved into robust horse keeping. His passion is to work with “problem horses” and bring them back into a herd to live and learn. To his believe, 99 % percent of those problem horses are degenerate by peoples fault. We do believe him.

foal breeder czech Hall of Fame

We end on this foal breeder ranch in a big canteen, with a cozy fire, a hall of fame with big trophies on the wall and watching a video devoted to draught horses. Next day we leave, full with new information about Czech Republic and Petr, Czech champion, foal breeder and passionate driver. Truly a afternoon to remember!
