Caravan Sites
We visit many caravan sites with our horse drawn caravan. Especially when we need to do laundry or desperately want a shower to take, we look for such place. Also when we need electricity, more then the solar panel can give us we try to find a place where horses are welcome. That's not alway's an easy task. No Way! When we arrive in Regensburg, beautiful city at the Danube,we drive 10 miles more then we want to. There was one campingground but before we even could ask the owner waved us "friendly" away. No place for us. We don't make troubles about that. We are not up to difficulties. Other caravan park owners just welcome us and do their best to find a suitable place for the horses. To do something back we often let children ride on Aysha and Isabella, pure fun.
The first caravan site was very special. Not really, a camping ground, but more of a hippy place to stay. Nevertheless, we did have a good time there with wonderful people. We even had the chance to watch how they make and build a Yurt or Ger! I found the following description in the wikipedia, they can better explain than we do, nevertheless we have the pictures to show of with!
Wikipedia article
The yurt consists of a circular wooden frame carrying a felt cover. The felt is made from the wool of the flocks of sheep that accompany the pastoralists. The timber to make the external structure is not to be found on the treeless steppes, and must be traded for in the valleys below.Wall Sections The frame consists of one or more lattice wall-sections, a door-frame, roof poles and a crown. Some styles of yurt have one or more columns to support the crown. The (self-supporting) wood frame is covered with pieces of felt.
Ropes or ribbons Depending on availability, the felt is additionally covered with canvas and/or sun-covers. The frame is held together with one or more ropes or ribbons. The structure is kept under compression by the weight of the covers, sometimes supplemented by a heavy weight hung from the center of the roof. They vary regionally, with straight or bent roof-poles, different sizes, and relative weight. This people we stay, not only building up those Yurts also make them. The felt displaced by blankets they collect on flee markets and relocation left-over.
Round Poles They also invented a real easy way to make round poles from square wooden slats. Hope we can explain it: they attached a band saw on a table, than the stats attached to a drilling machine on one site, the other side in a ring. The drilling machine slowly pushes the stats aside the band saw and there it is, a round pole on a very
simple effective (but slowly) way!
On the same “caravan site”, all kind of vans and gypsy caravans stay for months. People traveling from one place to the other just depend on where work is available.
Television Another caravan site we found was on the Main Danube canal. Loaded with big Mobil homes complete with satellite, scooters and much more. One actually arrives, took a lot effort to put the Van in the right way (we thought it was for the view), but it was to adjust the satellite. The moment he was ready, the owner popped up in the car, watching sunset on television. No kidding, we did find nice people on nice camping places. Still the best is parking in the middle of nowhere and stay there for a couple of days. No laundry worries, no schedule and just plenty time to watch sunset in real!
